"USAB 07 - Usability & Human-Computer Interaction for Medicine and Health Care"
Symposium, 22nd November 2007, Graz University Hospital, Graz (Austria)
Today, in Medicine and Health Care, computers can found everywhere; they are both ubiquitous and pervasive. Medical Information Systems and Decision Support Systems are extremely sophisticated and technological performance increases exponentially. However, human cognitive evolution does not advance at the same speed. Consequently, the focus on interaction and communication between human and computer is of increasing importance in Medicine & Health Care, since the daily actions of medical doctors are the central concern and must be supported by surrounding technology, in particular with new & emerging technologies.
Information systems are a central component of modern knowledge-based Medicine and Health services. However, Information technology must make Knowledge Management possible and support all medical staff in their daily work.
Within this environment of steadily increasing High-Tech Medicine; Information, Knowledge Management and Medical Information Systems, as well as their potential effectiveness in the modern Health Service, is of increasing interest.
The optimization of processes and operational sequences is particularly important for Medical Information Systems (e.g. Hospital Information Systems and Decision Support Systems). End users - within the context of this symposium; medical professionals - expect the software technology to provide a clear benefit; they expect to be supported efficiently and effectively in their daily activities.
Traditionally, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) bridges Psychology and Informatics, while Usability Engineering (UE), as an engineering discipline, is firmly anchored in software technology and guarantees a solid technological implementation. Together, HCI&UE provide the emerging potential to assist the daily workflows in the realm of medicine and health care. Innovation and new developments often take place just at the junction of two or more disciplines.
In future, as traditional computers disappear into an increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous background, we will be increasingly challenged in the direction of Human Information Presentation & Interaction (HIPI).
To promote closer collaboration between engineers, researchers and medical professionals, we invite your participation in the 3rd Usability Symposium of the Austrian HCI&UE Group in Graz (Austria).
Mission Statement: Together Today, combining Data, Information and Knowledge, to support the work of the Medical Professionals of tomorrow!
We are seeking high quality papers, which will be reviewed in a full paper review by at least three independent reviewers. Accepted contributions will be presented during the symposium as full paper, short paper or poster/demonstration. Selected contributions will appear in an SCI listed publication. Selected accepted and carefully revised contributions will be published in a conference proceedings book in English as this conference language supports a broad access within an international audience. Suggestions for Tutorials and Workshops are also welcome.
Topics include but are not limited to:
All papers undergo careful peer review from at least three international experts.
The Proceedings will be published by Springer in the
Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series.
Important dates are announced on the symposium's Homepage.
