Cell Biology, Histology and Embryology

What´s that?

The scientific field Cell Biology and Histology deals with human life structures presented in light and electron microscopy.

It is divided into three main sections:

  1. study of cells (cell biology/cytology)
  2. study of tissues (histology) and
  3. microscopic anatomy of organs

Within this field, not only the morphology of the structures but also the structure-function relationship and the structural shift under experimental conditions are of particular interest.

While teaching is mainly limited to the presentation of human structures, research covers micro morphology of life substances in general. Histology, in cooperation with molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology, provides important information regarding the localization of single molecules, cells, and united cell structures in the organism. Without, today’s modern science would be unthinkable.

The scientific field Embryology deals with the development of human gametes from fertilization to the stepwise differentiation into organs.  It covers the basics of reproductive medicine (IVF, cloning, stem cell research…) as well as the reasons for environmental aberration (teratology). The research unit Human Teratogenes scientifically processes the obtained data (see also Research unit).
