Academic Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatology

Overview

After the successful completion of the Advanced Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncolgy Course attendees are certified as Academic Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology; participants who limit their studies before pursuing the degree may receive the International Dermoscopy Diploma after 2 semester.

The certificate Academic Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncoloy is open to any physician and nursing expert with clinical experience in dermatooncology. The course focuses on both simple and more complex skin tumors and their dermoscopic diagnoses at an advanced level.

Program Objectives

The goal of this program is to provide substantiated practical skills, knowledge, and experience in dermoscopy and to offer extensive knowledge of the epidemiology and the primary and secondary prevention of skin cancer. After the successful completion of the course, participants will be able to effectively diagnose melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors and to act as board-certified experts in dermoscopy and preventive dermatooncology.

The certificate course comprises two education levels (60 ECTS):

1) Basic education level - Diploma Course (36 ECTS)

The basic education level will provide the participants with a range of skills and knowledge, including:

  • Epidemiology of skin cancer
  • Primary and Secondary prevention
  • Dermoscopy criteria Pattern analysis and diagnostic algorithms
  • Special issues in dermoscopy
  • Dermoscopic-pathologic correlations
  • Dermoscopy in daily routine and consultation on the job
  • Future aspects

2) Advanced education level - Certificate Course (24 ECTS)

The basic education level will provide the participants skills and knowledge in:

  • Therapeutic options for skin tumors
  • Rare skin tumors
  • Recent research
  • Practical training

Course Format

 The Advanced Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncolgy Course is designed to meet the needs also of working attendees by providing a flexible program with the majority of its requirements conducted Online. Attendance is required for only two 5- and 10-day courses, respectively, of which the 10-day practical training course may be completed internationally in various centers of excellence that are run by some of the world leading dermoscopy experts.

The online part of the course will take place at the Virtual Medical Campus (VMC). The VMC is a learning, and teaching system for students and teachers of the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and for eventual partner institutions. The Virtual Medical Campus accompanies attendance classes and supports blended and virtual learning scenarios and provides information concerning teaching and studies for the public.

All participants will get a username and a password for entering the VMC.

Assessment requirements

The certificate course comprises 2 education levels, 16 online modules, one 5-day hands-on seminar (International Short Course), and one 10-day practical training course that may be completed within 4 semesters (60 ECTS); 14 modules end with a multiple-choice test, ten of which additionally incorporate 3 case studies. At the end of the diploma (basic education level) and the certificate (advanced education level) course, attendees must pass a final multiple-choice test consisting of questions about the entire content of the diploma and the certificate course, respectively. Each time they must also send in 3 cases for teleconsultation (second opinion) following a pre-defined checklist.

Once the hands-on seminar and the practical training course are done, participants must submit a longer paper each time in order to acquire the certificate Academic Expert in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology.

Relationship to the Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology

Participants that complete this certificate course may be eligible for credit for a related course in the Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology.
