Skin cancer is a major public health problem. The incidence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer has increased over the last years. Skin cancer education, early detection of skin cancer as well as screening and follow-up of people at high risk of melanoma became cornerstones in dermatooncology. Dermoscopy (dermatoscopy, epiluminescence microscopy, surface microscopy) is a non-invasive method in dermatology that enables the visualisation of morphological features not seen by the naked eye and thus links clinical dermatology and dermatopathology. It allows the identification of specific morphologic criteria in different skin tumours, improving significantly the early diagnosis of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), but only for experienced examiners. The earlier diagnosis of malignant skin tumours and avoidance of unnecessary excisions of benign skin tumours leads to decreased morbidity and medical costs.
Furthermore, dermoscopy is becoming increasingly important in the field of general dermatology. Dermoscopy has been shown to facilitate the clinical recognition of several inflammatory and infectious diseases, as well as their discrimination from skin tumours.
Graduates of the Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology (M.Sc. DermPrevOncol) have acquired fundamental and detailed knowledge in the non-invasive diagnosis of skin cancers and especially of their differential diagnosis and precursors of skin cancer.
The Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology (M.Sc. DermPrevOncol) is a highly degreed specialist in dermoscopy both at practical and scientific level. Graduates will be able to present important information for dermatologists, general practitioners as well as dermatooncologists concerning management of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) or other non-neoplastic skin diseases.
Moreover, participants will be able to apply dermoscopy in the field of inflammatory or immunological and infectious skin-and hair disorders.
Furthermore, general and detailed knowledge of epidemiology as well as primary and secondary prevention of skin cancer is provided, therefore graduates can develop preventive concepts concerning UV-related skin damages according to current literature and state of knowledge.
The Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology (M.Sc. DermPrevOncol) is able to initiate, support and monitor research projects concerning dermoscopy, epidemiology and prevention of skin cancer.
Physicians (General Practitioners, Dermatologists, occupational health physician, physicians who work in preventive medicine, gerontologists, specialists for plastic surgery, gynaecologists, paediatricians, other specialists) and nurses who wish to gain advanced expertise in the theoretical and practical diagnosis and management of skin tumours.
The following conditions must (should) be met:
Search and review of literature, presentation of own cases with, discussion, literature search, interpretation and proposal of therap
The Master of Science in Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology (M.Sc. DermPrevOncol) is a three years postgraduate distance learning, part-time online-course and lasts 6 semesters containing 11 teaching modules, including required attendance at a 5 days Course at the Medical University of Graz (ISCD) and a 10 days practical training at one of the Centers of Excellence
At the end of each module students have to pass online-exams. Students have to present theoretical and practical knowledge and should present own cases and discuss them according to the current literature. online After drawing up a Master's thesis and final board examination including the presentation and defense of the Master's thesis and successfully completing, students will receive a certificate of the Medical University of Graz ("Master of Dermoscopy and Preventive Dermatooncology M.Sc.DermPrevOncol“).
The course is presented by international experts of Dermatology and Dermoscopy, all of them members of the International Dermoscopy Society, most of them pioneers of dermoscopy and all of them with high degrees of experience in the field of dermoscopy.
