This course consists of 3 topics: Literature Clubs, Project Presentations, and Guest Lectures. In the Literature Clubs students will discuss current articles in small groups. Several Literature Club groups are offered in each semester which cover differend topics from the research areas of the Doctoral Schools. The project presentations give the students the opportunity to give account of their current research and discuss their results with fellow students and the faculty of supervisors of their Doctoral School. Guest Lectures with national and international speakers will be offered throughout the semester.
How can I get the credits for the course “Literature Clubs, Project Presentation and Guest Lectures”?
You need to collect 30 units of Literature Clubs, Project Presentations and Guest Lectures to receive the credits for one certificate.
How can I collect the units?
Whenever you participate in a Literature Club meeting, a Project Presentation or a Guest Lecture you can ask the present PI(s) to confirm your participation by signing your “Literature Clubs, Project Presentation and Guest Lectures – form sheet”.
Do I have to collect units from all three parts (Literature Clubs, Project Presentation and Guest Lectures)?
No. You can decide for yourself in what way you want to collect the 30 units. Ideally, you would collect units from each part.
How do I register for a Literature Club?
From the second semester on you will receive an email from the Office for Doctoral Studies approx. 2 weeks before the start of the semester containing a list of offered Literature Clubs. Within a certain timeframe students can register for one Literature Club of their choice via MedOnline.
Can I register for more than one Literature Club?
Yes. But via MedOnline you can register for just one group. If you want to attend more Literature Clubs please contact the leader of the Literature Club directly via email.
What can I do if I miss my registration time?
You can contact the leader of the Literature Club directly and ask if you still can participate in his/her Literature Club.
Can I join a Literature Club that has already started?
Yes, if the leader of the Literature Club agrees.
Where can I get information about scheduled dates and places of the Literature Club?
Registered participants will be informed by the leader of the Literature Club.
How many doctoral candidates participate in each Literature Clubs?
The optimal number of participants of a Literature Club is between 7 and 9.
How many units do I get per Literature Club meeting?
The leader of the Literature Club will decide on the amounts of units per meeting. Normally you will get between 4 and 6 units. It depends on the actual length of the meeting and the estimated preparation time.
Can I suggest a new Literature Club?
Yes, of course. The Literature Clubs are offered by the doctoral programs and they are developing on an ongoing basis. If you think a Literature Club is missing, you can always contact the speaker of your Doctoral School. Before the Literature Club can be approved, a Faculty member must agree on being responsible for the Literature Club.
How do I register for the Project Presentation?
The project presentation will be organized by the speaker of your Doctoral School. An invitation to the meeting(s) and a preliminary program will be sent to your students e-mail address. The speaker of the Doctoral School can define if it is mandatory for you to give a presentation of your data, however your participation in the meetings is expected.
How many units do I get per Project Presentation meeting?
The speaker of your Doctoral School will decide on the amounts of units per meeting. It depends on the actual length of the meeting.
How do I find out when there will be a Guest Lecture?
Invitations to all Guest Lectures that are offered by your Doctoral School will be sent to your students e-mail address.
I want to attend a public lecture at the University. Can I get units for it?
In principle the speaker of the Doctoral School decides which lecture can be recognized as a Guest Lecture in his/her Doctoral School. Therefore, you should contact him/her when you want to suggest that a specific lecture should be recognized as a Guest Lecture. At least one PI must also agree to attend the suggested lecture because a Faculty member will have to confirm your participation at the lecture by signing your “Literature Clubs, Project Presentation and Guest Lectures – form sheet”. If the speaker of the Doctoral School agrees, the Office for Doctoral Studies will send the information to all doctoral candidates in your respective Doctoral School.
Where can I get information about the Guest Lectures offered by other doctoral programs?

How many units do I get per Guest Lecture?
For every Guest Lecture you will get 2 Units.

Can I start to collect the units before my 3rd semester?
According to the curriculum you have to complete the “Literature Clubs, Project Presentation and Guest Lectures” course in the 3rd and in the 4th semester. But there's nothing wrong with starting to collect the units already in the first or in the second semester.
What do I do when I need more than one semester for collecting the 30 units?
It doesn’t matter if you need more than one semester to collect all 30 units. Whenever you have collected the 30 units you can hand in the form sheet to receive the credits.
What happens when I complete the 30 units?
As soon as you have collected the 30 units you can hand in the form sheet. Within 1 week you will get your credits in MedOnline.
Where can I hand in the form sheet?
Upon agreement, you can hand it in at the Office for Doctoral Studies (Neue Stiftingtalstrasse 6/3, 8010 Graz).
