ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr.phil. Gernot Desoye

Gernot DESOYE is a biochemist at a clinical department (Gynecology and Obstetrics) and is thus particularly interested in integrating clinical and basic research. His main interest is understanding the role of the placenta in protecting the fetus from the adverse maternal environment leading to inflammation associated with diabetes and obesity. In recent years he has been exploring the placental metabolism, transport and pro-inflammatory properties of lipoproteins and has characterized the effects of insulin and pro-inflammatory insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-2 on trophoblast and endothelial cells. He has developed novel protocols that allow isolation of endothelial cells both from arterial and venous vessels of the placenta. Currently his group aims to elucidate the vascular inflammatory events leading to placental hypervascularization and enhanced placental and fetal growth in maternal diabetes and obesity. Gernot Desoye is Coordinator of the 7FP EU Project “DALI” (http://www.dali-project.eu/contact.html).
