Assoz. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Mag. Dr.rer.nat Gunther Marsche

Gunther MARSCHE is a biochemist and pharmacologist whose aim is to identify and characterize novel mediators of inflammation such as protein or lipid degradation/oxidation products. The main focus of his group is set on exploring the role of leukocyte-derived reactive oxygen species in vascular inflammation, thereby facilitating the development of vascular disease. His group in particular examined myeloperoxidase (MPO)-induced loss of anti-inflammatory properties of HDL and the role of MPO-modified lipoproteins in endothelial dysfunction and foam cell formation. These recently identified pathways modulate endothelial and macrophage function; thus, they are likely to serve as novel therapeutic targets for both vascular diseases as well as other inflammatory diseases.
