Barbara OBERMAYER-PIETSCH is an endocrinologist who mainly focuses on biomarkers of osteoporosis and metabolic diseases, including markers and mediators of Inflammation. She has explored the impact of genetics and the environment - and in particular their relation to inflammation - in endocrine disorders such as osteoporosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and lactose intolerance. She is a member of several international consortia, steering committees and research groups. She has established and phenotyped several cohorts including more than 23,000 DNA and serum samples from controls and patients with specific disorders. Currently she intensifies her research into bone biomarkers in the context of inflammation and the cross-talk of adipokines and osteokines as fundamental novel principles in the regulation of calcium homeostasis in vascular inflammation, atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
