Assoz. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr.med.univ. Vanessa Stadlbauer-Köllner

Vanessa Stadlbauer-Köllner is a clinical gastroenterologist and hepatologist who focusses on studying the complications of liver cirrhosis. She conducts translational research projects to understand innate immunology, especially neutrophil granulocyte function, microbiome composition, gut permeability, bacterial translocation and inflammation in chronic liver diseases. With her team she conducts clinical studies to modulate the gut microbiome and gut permeability with probiotics, develops biomarker to predict study infection risk and outcome in cirrhosis and searches for the molecular mechanisms of complications of cirrhosis such as sarcopenia. She also studies the influence of different medications, especially proton pump inhibitors, on gut microbiome composition and outcome. Furthermore, she expanded her research to other diseases, where the gut-liver axis plays an important role, such as diabetes, obesity, sepsis or dementia. Her goal is to use translational research techniques to better understand the pathophysiology of complications of cirrhosis and to develop novel treatment approaches for these diseases.
