Psychiatrie und Psychotherapeutische Medizin

Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine provides inpatient and outpatient care to people with mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety and eating disorders. Integrated into University Hospital Graz, its consultation services treat people with physical illnesses and mental disorders. The department has acute and special clinics and over 64 beds in four wards including the closed inpatient ward.

We are responsible for treating acute and chronic psychiatric disorders as well as teaching and training students, nursing staff and medical specialists.

Another key responsibility is in science and research: Several research teams work on different research topics related to psychiatry in close collaboration with (inter)national research partners and consortia.

Eva Maria Reininghaus

"Mental illness is the main cause of reduced quality of life and has a significant impact on life expectancy. The prevention and treatment of mental disorders is fundamentally important since the number of people affected is steadily increasing. For example, depression is one of the most common illnesses worldwide."
