Lifespan extension comes at the expense of poor health, chronic disability and diminished life quality – often due to cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure. Every fifth person aged more than 65 years is at increased risk to develop heart failure, one of the most rapidly increasing forms of cardiovascular disease. To date, no causative therapy has been shown to convincingly combat heart failure. Our team is undertaking an exciting study program looking at how natural compounds that mimic the biological effects of caloric restriction could protect the aging heart from disease and expand lifespan.
