In the ongoing project we are developing a novel, innovative, smartphone-based mobile solution to enable a ‘world-wide’ application of the general movement assessment (GMA). GMA, a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool applied in the first 5 months of life, allows us to assess the integrity of the young nervous system and predict neurodevelopmental and cognitive outcomes in children. This tool shall be implemented for diagnosing neurological defects and predicting the development of abnormalities particularly in low-resource settings. GMA reflects the functioning of the developing brain and is normally made by video recording the whole body of an infant over 3-5 minutes followed by expert analysis.
The GMApp will be a semi-automatic recording analysis application based on three pillars: (i) a new technology for data acquisition and processing; (ii) a distribution system in order to provide local or remote GM experts with data recorded by field workers; (iii) a feedback loop and ‘semaforo principle’ to enable detailed diagnostics and earlier intervention.
