Guide for Supervision of Doctoral Candidates (Handbuch der Doktorandinnen- und Doktorandenbetreuung)
‘…. supervision of doctoral candidates is in no way a trivial task …’
When it comes to quality assurance in doctoral studies, good supervision becomes increasingly important. Empirical surveys show that the quality of doctoral supervision not only plays an important role in the outcome of doctoral studies but also has a predictive effect on the success of the career path chosen after graduation.
The question, however, is what parameters constitute quality in doctoral supervision? Even more so: What makes for a good doctoral supervisor? What measures do universities need to undertake in order to assure that doctoral students receive the best possible mentoring and support? Whilst organizing supervision workshops for doctoral supervisors, Mag.a Maria Friedl at the “Office of Doctoral Studies” - together with Dean of Doctoral Studies Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Holzer - composed a guide for doctoral education at the Medical University of Graz. The guide compiles all information deemed relevant to successful supervisors and doctoral candidates alike.
