Tenure track professorships: A big boost for science

The best (junior) researchers from around the world who hold their own in the selection procedure have a unique opportunity as tenure track professors at Med Uni Graz: they can establish a working group in their field of research in the state-of-the-art, point-of-care environment of Medical Science City Graz and share their special expertise with the international research community over the course of a long-term scientific career. The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, an evaluation of the qualification agreement may be possible sooner. When the defined goals have been achieved, an unlimited term contract as an associate professor is concluded, which entails belonging to the professorial curia as well as taking on responsibility for one's own field of research. Tenure Track Professor of AI to Research Brain Health and Disease in Clinical and Translational Neuroscience

We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in neuroscience. The successful candidate is expected to conduct interdisciplinary research and teaching in this field. The new position will complement the research activities of the Department of Neurology and related disciplines in the research field Neuroscience at the Medical University of Graz (e.g., psychiatry, neurosurgery). The successful candidate should be a proven expert in applying AI to studying mechanisms of brain health and disease and represent these areas in research and teaching. The Department of Neurology takes a holistic healthcare approach according to the biopsychosocial model regarding research, education and patient care. The successful candidate should be willing to engage in interdisciplinary and interprofessional cooperation between different specialist areas in the field of neuroscience. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.


Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting cutting-edge research in brain health and disease using AI
  • Leading an internationally recognized research group and acquiring third-party funding
  • Producing high-quality scientific publications
  • Networking through national and international research collaborations
  • Cooperating on research that exploits the existing strengths of the Department of Neurology; the Institute of Medical Informatics, Statistics and Documentation; the Division of Neuroradiology, Vascular and Interventional Radiology; other related disciplines and the research field Neuroscience at the Medical University of Graz
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and doctoral students and mentoring and promoting young researchers
  • Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area


Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in medical informatics, computer science or data science, MD/PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a field related to neuroscience
  • Profound research expertise in the field of AI to understand the healthy and diseased brain based on neuroimaging data
  • Proven track record of high-quality publications
  • Peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding
  • Experience in leading national and/or international research projects
  • Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and/or postgraduate students
  • Postdoctoral research stay abroad or at a different institution than where the doctoral degree was completed
  • High level of proficiency in both written and spoken English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages


The ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • Outstanding knowledge and understanding of the function and changes of the brain in health and disease, alongside a broad clinical understanding
  • Within three years of employment: Proficiency in German sufficient for teaching at the Medical University of Graz and participating in university committees (equivalent to proficiency level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Willingness to establish and engage in interdisciplinary and interprofessional cooperation
  • Responsible work habits, resilience and problem-solving skills
  • Empathy, good communication and social skills
  • Systematic and analytical mindset, excellent organizational skills
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Gender and diversity skills
