We are looking for an excellent candidate with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research and teaching agenda in the field of structural biology of emerging drug targets with a focus on the role of molecular mechanisms in diseases related to vascular biology, immunology or inflammation.
The primary objective of research and teaching activities at the Division of Medicinal Chemistry of the Otto Loewi Research Center for Vascular Biology, Immunology and Inflammation is to advance the understanding of mechanisms that involve protein targets currently considered undruggable. Excellent research infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment including a protein expression and purification platform, interaction assays (e.g., ITC, FP, SPR), integrative structural biology (NMR spectroscopy, in-house XRD/SAXS) and high-performance computing provide an optimal foundation for the implementation of high-level scientific projects. The division’s well-established network of national and international partners from academia and industry supports the development of innovative research initiatives and promotes interdisciplinary exchange.
The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.
Core duties and responsibilities:
- Conducting cutting-edge research in the field of medicinal chemistry with a focus on structural biology of emerging drug targets
- Producing high-quality scientific publications on a regular basis
- Leading an internationally recognized research group and acquiring third-party funding
- Networking through national and international research collaborations
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and
promoting junior researchers
- Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area
Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:
- PhD or MD or equivalent doctoral degree in biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, chemistry, structural
biology, pharmacy, pharmacology or a related field
- Profound research expertise in the field of structural biology
- Previous research experience in studying protein structure and dynamics, preferably using NMR
spectroscopy, bioinformatics and/or molecular modeling
- Previous research experience in investigating protein targets in one of the following areas: i) autophagy
or lysosome, ii) RNA-binding proteins or protein condensates, iii) membrane proteins or signal
transduction, iv) epigenetic regulators, v) ubiquitin ligases or proteasome
- Proven track record of high-quality publications and peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party
funding as a lead or principal investigator
- Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- or postgraduate students
- Postdoctoral research stay abroad or at a different institution than where the PhD was completed (at
least six months)
- High level of proficiency in both written and spoken English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and written commitment to teach in German
within three years
