The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, an evaluation of the qualification agreement may be possible sooner. When the defined goals have been achieved, an unlimited term contract as an associate professor is concluded, which entails belonging to the professorial curia as well as taking on responsibility for one's own field of research. We are looking for an excellent specialist and researcher to expand our internationally renowned scientific and research agenda in the field of tumor orthopaedics. At the University Hospital Graz Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma, the Section of Tumor Orthopaedics plays a key role in patient care and research. The Tenure Track Professor of Tumor Orthopaedics should continue to increase the national and international visibility of tumor orthopaedics at the Graz location and develop innovative research programs in the fields of sarcoma research, registry-based research, clinical trials, artificial intelligence, personalized medicine and long-term outcomes. Tumor orthopaedics is an integral component of the university's sarcoma center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Graz (CCC) of University Hospital Graz, providing care for interdisciplinary patients with musculoskeletal tumors from all federal provinces in Austria. The catchment area consists of 3 to 4 million inhabitants. The interdisciplinary tumor board for bone and soft tissue tumors reviewed a total of 1,126 cases in 2025. Furthermore, the Section of Tumor Orthopaedics provided surgical treatment to 483 patients with bone and soft tissue tumors in 2025. The section is an expert member of the European Reference Network EURACAN. Alongside scientific tasks, it is necessary to provide top-notch clinical care in tumor orthopaedics in the joint discipline orthopaedics and trauma—from the first visit to the outpatient clinic and surgical care with interdisciplinary consensus to discharge. In addition to treating primary benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, a tertiary center must also provide operative treatment for patients with bone metastases. The tumor team currently has three operation days and one outpatient clinic day and consists of three specialists and three residents. Its current status as a reference center with a national and international reputation needs to be further consolidated. International collaborations at the clinical and scientific levels should also be expanded.


Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Innovatively advancing research in the field of tumor orthopaedics with an emphasis on investigating treatment options and improving survival rates
  • Regularly publishing scientific papers in the field of tumor orthopaedics
  • Directing an internationally renowned research group and acquiring third-party funding with an emphasis on clinical orthopaedics and sarcoma research at the CCC
  • Taking on a leading role in the tumor team of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma
  • Collaborating on training specialists in the field of tumor orthopaedics
  • Networking through national and international research collaborations
  • Providing inpatient and outpatient care according to modern biopsychosocial and personalized medicine and being on call
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in medicine, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting junior researchers
  • Participating in effective public relations work/science communication in the research area


Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • Degree in medicine and a relevant doctoral degree
  • Authorization to practice as a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology or orthopaedics and orthopedic surgery or equivalent qualification from another country
  • Several years of professional experience with surgical qualifications especially in the field of tumor orthopaedics (proof provided by a surgical log)
  • Experience with interdisciplinary and interprofessional care for sarcoma patients
  • Profound research expertise in the field of tumor orthopaedics
  • Proven track record of high-impact scientific publications and third-party funding acquisition in the field of tumor orthopaedics
  • Experience in managing a scientific working group
  • Experience in university teaching and/or (co)supervising diploma/doctoral students and/or training postdoctoral scholars
  • Research stay abroad of several months at a different research institution than the one where specialist training was received
  • C1 level of proficiency in both spoken and written German and English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
