Medical University of Graz has achieved outstanding success in the 5th call of Africa-UniNet: With five approved projects, it has the highest number of funded proposals among all participating universities. These projects strengthen Med Uni Graz’s international network and contribute significantly to scientific collaboration with African partner institutions.
A total of 64 project proposals were submitted, of which the 15 top-rated projects, along with five more on the reserve list, were approved for funding by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). The five funded projects of Med Uni Graz focus on key areas in medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, and biotechnology:
- Julia Kargl (Projekt P170_Kenya): Toxicological and immunopharmacological potential of khat (Catha edulis) - Partner: Egerton University, Kenya
- Helmut Bischof (Projekt P154_Nigeria): Multi-target effects of phenolic-rich formulations to enhance anti-cancer potential - Partner: Bowen University, Nigeria
- Marco Eigenfeld with three projects:
- (Projekt P161_Ethiopia) Photodynamic therapy against multidrug-resistant Candida albicans in HIV-infected patients - Partner: Mekelle University, Ethiopia
- (Projekt P153_Egypt) Probiotic yeasts and nanotechnology for health and food applications - Partner: Damanhour University, Egypt
- (Projekt P155_Nigeria) Traditional Nigerian diets for sustainable nutrition and disease prevention - Partner: Lead City University, Nigeria
Africa-UniNet was initiated by the BMBWF and is coordinated by OeAD. The network aims to build long-term, sustainable cooperation between Austrian and African higher education institutions, focusing on research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building.
