Research focus Metabolism

PI: Gernot Grabner

Focus: We investigate how alterations in lipid metabolism affect physiological processes and disease development. We are working on lipid-degrading enzymes (lipases) particularly in inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system. Our interdisciplinary approach includes biochemical methods, molecular biology techniques, histological-, lipid-, and behavioral analyses. We also develop chemical tools to specifically modulate the activity of lipases and advance innovative therapeutic approaches.

Network: We collaborate closely with researchers from the Medical University of Graz (Dagmar Kratky, Dagmar Kolb, Gerd Leitinger, Aitak Farzi) as well as Robert Zimmermann (Uni Graz), Rolf Breinbauer (TU Graz), Chun-Xia Yi (UMC Amsterdam), Ruth Birner-Grünberger (TU Wien), Michael Trauner (MedUni Wien), and Mario van der Stelt (Uni Leiden).

Projects

Targeting PNPLA3 activity to elucidate its role in MASLD

  • Liver steatosis affects approximately one in four people worldwide and can progress to severe liver disease like cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure. A genetic variant in a gene called PNPLA3 significantly increases disease risk, yet its precise role is not fully understood. In this interdisciplinary research project, new chemical tools will be developed to investigate the function of PNPLA3 in human model systems, to identify new strategies for prevention and therapy.
  • Duration: 2026 – 2030
  • Funded by: FWF
  • Project partners: Rolf Breinbauer (TU Graz), Michael Trauner (MedUni Vienna), Mario van der Stelt (Uni Leiden), Karl Gruber (Uni Graz)
