The third phase comprises three trimesters. Trimester 1 comprises 16 weeks practice in surgical an perioperative subjects. Trimester 2 compises 16 weeks practice in internal medicine and neurology. Trimester 3 comprises 16 weeks practice in pediatrics an adolescent medicine (4 weeks), in psychiatry (4 weeks), in a compulsory elective (4 weeks) and in a general medicine practice in a university general medicine teaching practice in Austria (4 weeks). Knowledge acquisition is verified by special methods of examination and case reports that are examined by Med Uni Graz instructors. The logbook serves as the basis for documentation.
During the surgical trimester, basic surgical skills and abilities are acquired and consolidated. Many of them have already been practiced on models before the start of the CPY. Students are now personally responsible for trying them out on patients independently. This provides students another opportunity to consolidate the skills that they will need to treat patients immediately after they graduate as young physicians and thus to gain confidence in conducting these basic activities. They should be optimally prepared for their upcoming entry into working life as a doctor.
Students may choose from among the following wards in the subjects surgery, special surgery (sense organs) and anesthesiology. At least 8 weeks of the surgery block must be completed. The order of the blocks can be chosen freely.

The second trimester builds on prior knowledge of internal medicine and neurology to consolidate the students' thinking and acting according to the biopsychosocial model. Complex patient profiles are analyzed. Differential diagnoses, the subsequent clarification process and evidence-based therapy are prepared. Structured case reports prepared by the students serve as an assessment and feedback tool and help to manage learning outcomes. The understanding of disease is oriented to achieving a balance between acute health problems and their long-term consequences in chronic care management. A professional attitude towards patients regardless of their gender, origin or religion is important. Psychosomatic constellations as well as psychiatric comorbidities should be recognized so that the inclusion of specialists contributes to more holistic treatment, improves therapeutic success and increases patient quality of life. Medical communication competence is enhanced and an interest in recognizing individuals holistically is kindled and consolidated. The basis is created upon which the students can apply the biopsychosocial model in their working life.

The psychiatry block during the third trimester builds upon basic knowledge of the biopsychosocial model to increase understanding of mental illness and kindle an interest in psychiatric diagnosis and therapy. Knowledge of typical psychiatric comorbidities of patients with organic disease helps to provide more holistic treatment, improve therapeutic outcomes and increase patient health and quality of life. Medical communication competence is enhanced and an interest in recognizing individuals holistically is kindled and consolidated. The basis is created for easing any reservations the students may have about having contact with patients and applying their acquired competences in their later working life.
